The first 3DS one was 3U, the one I said they stopped on. Obviously the PSP ones didn’t have it because there was no right stick on the PSP, but they kept it for the first three generations. I used it until I was forced to switch.

imo it was objectively better because the buttons were less overmapped and you had full access to all actions even while actively moving the camera. Of course, this required the famous Claw. And that’s the reason they took it out in 3U—the 3DS and Wii U have the left thumbstick ABOVE the d-pad, making it damn near impossible to accurately control with the claw grip.
