The original Playstation FF7 had a black-haired Cloud who was a detective in NYC hunting down Sephiroth. This was eventually scrapped for the version we all know, while ideas and assets were eventually used for Parasite Eve, except they made the lead a female who looked similar to blonde Cloud.
In FF7, Zack is a black-haired Cloud who gets killed and has the blonde Cloud assume his life. This resembles how the original idea and character was scrapped for the new one to take its place.
