I think it was by design. For a lot of reasons.

1. The whole purpose of the game was that the good of humanity can't be judged by the wicked and Fou and Ryu's battle was to give humanity a second chance, even if that meant letting scum bags like Yuna go.

2. popular fan theory is that 4 is the prequel to all of the games and that Yuna is the one who not only gives deis her snake body but creates the false goddess Myria

3. Nothing is pointless because it's all these events who shape who we are and who we become.

according to the artbook (and someone else's translations) the Dragon Slayer sword was actually created when Yuna (FUCKING YUNA!) tried summoning a god to this world.

It didn't go so hot and all he got was the gods living immortal screaming pissed off in pain forever head.

So Yuna cock back that he is decided to forge the gods head into a sword. And the sword is still alive and pissed and devours devours whatever it cuts
