Perception is extremely important; make sure it is high.

Small Guns is the most important skill to tag and beef up in the early game. For a first-timer's purposes, skills like throwing and melee are practically useless.

Agility is what determines how many AP you have per combat term, so don't be a slow-ass.

Save early; save often.

VATS combat is a bit unrefined; you rarely should aim at anything but the eyes or the head, if you need to use the VATS.

The time limit is not as huge a concern as you'd think. There are ways in-game to lengthen it if things are cut too close.

It's ok, but not as good as Fallout 1.
