Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, etc.

Not even kidding. Shadowman feels like a BETA version of Metroid if it had ever gone 3D that is, before Prime became a thing. The key points are:

Similarities:
>Non linear progresion.
>Ability to backtrack anywhere in the game.
>New gear unlocks new areas or secrets.
>You get eventual immunity to fire.

Shadowman felt lika very barebones platformer with annoyting shit to collect, like cadeux but the sum of its parts make a nice game, I think. It's biggest flaw in my opinion is locking you out of using bullet-based weapons in hell, which is beyond lame.

The sound design in the PC version is superb, though, I play it for the ASMR experience.

I have an appreciation for games that focus on player skill rather than skill point bullshit and 'skill progression' systems. That aint gameplay. Give me a move set and make a game out of it. This is what zelda has been doing for decades and they've been pretty successful at it, I can enjoy shit like this any time of the year.
