Strider is my personal favorite. Good graphics and sound. Kind of a Metroidvania before that was even a thing. The controls are slightly jank, but it's forgivable considering how much shit you can do. I didn't like the linear games in the franchise nearly as much. The reboot in 2014 was fucking awesome.

PS1 Strider 2 also has a bonus level that kinda looks and feels like a debug level they made to test out all the mechanics. I usually ignore it (it's optional) but it is decent enough every now and then.

1. I started gaming in 1989.
2. Why would the passage of time depress me? It's inevitable.
3. The problem is that the gaming industry has adopted the very play-it-safe homogenized Hollywood blockbuster model. And no indie has the resources to compete with Konami or SNK in their heyday, so they're generally lacking in polish and professionalism.

What do I miss? A time before patches, DLC and monetization. I miss games as a product rather than a service. I miss game manuals, arcade culture and new experiences. Most importantly, the reason most people are here on /vr/, is an emphasis on gameplay over narrative; we shouldn't be regressing. Some of the tightest games are still the oldest. That shouldn't be the case.

I'm not overly cynical. There are modern games I DO like: Demon's Souls, Rime, Giana Sisters, Strider. I'm even looking forward to a few, just not as many as I used to.

HG101's articles are crap sometimes, but the site features a wide array of /vr/ info. Start with the Profiles section which covers general subject matter, then look at the Series section to read about long-running franchises. After that, you can sort through reviews by Company or Genre. That ought to get you started. Looking at a Genre page will also show you a screenshot of all the games in question. Some companies to look out for: Tecmo, Koei, Compile, Irem, Midway, Taito, Namco.

Retro marketing only. No way I'm putting pixels up on my walls. Bead sprites and shadow boxes look awful.

Slick and cool, just like the game itself.
