The most interesting part of Sonic Team's temporary relocation to the US West Coast was their involvement with the music scene, but many of the original acts intended to supply licensed tracks (Magna-Fi, Sins of a Divine Mother, Mona Lisa Overdtrive) got ditched and we got worse replacements as a result

Magna-Fi were actually the ones who decided to pull out from licencing Who I Am because they discovered that SEGA had arranged the contract so that they'd retain ownership over the track, and the group wanted to use it as the opener for their new album, so they ended up writing an entirely new song which eventually became All Hail Shadow.

I get the sense that Jun Senoue is a bit of a geek in terms of American grassroots music scenes because tons of the Sonic series' musical contributors either only got big after signing on or never had much of a dedicated following at all (this one being a good example).
