I am. 2019 wasn't a productive year for me, because moving places, fixing my teeth, modding burnout, etc. I played mostly Quake to unwind last year, and got little Doom done.

I'm done with a lot of that stuff now though, and I've been getting back into it, and I've made some decent progress in just the last month, when I've had time.

>Rise Of The Triad
It's DOS, yes, but I tended to play it anyway. Possibly try turning on the Ludicrous Gibs cheat if you find the game is running too fast.
I don't know how well DOSBox runs on Win98 desu, never tried that, so maybe that's an option.
I remember however that I would simply play some DOS games on Win98 and it was mostly fine (Syndicate Wars had sped up animations in the menus, but cutscenes and gameplay ran just fine).

ROTT doesn't play quite like other first person shooters mind, it's a lot closer to a shootemup arcade game with its powerups and temporary weapons, which there are plenty of. 80% of your arsenal is numerous different kinds of bazookas with different behaviors, and you're encouraged to play fast and loose with them given that you're somewhat protected from their splash damage.

>Quake
There's also good ways to play it on later machines, like Quakespasm. If you pirate it, make sure you get the music too.

For some common noob mistakes; remember that the shotgun in Quake is more like a pistol tier weapon, and NOT as powerful as the one in Doom, and that you only really have the super shotgun for that, which has the really wide spread, the shotgun is more comparable to Duke Nukem 3D's pistol than anything else.
Shamblers also take 50% damage from rockets and grenades, so save those for other monsters (like Zombies), instead try to save some nails and some power cells for the Shamblers instead.

>Age Of Empires II
I'd suggest starting out that way, yes.
There was some HD version with a new faction a few years ago, which, uh, was ok I guess. I know nothing about this new thing they're doing.

>Simcity 3000
It's still a lot like Simcity 2000, only with different graphics and some more depth of gameplay. I'm extremely fond of Simcity 2000s art direction, so I can never truly say that Simcity 3000 looks 'better', but it does look good, and I do like the improved gameplay.
There's an expansion as well.

Im trying to capture those elements in a retro-aesthetical game but y'know dev-hell getting geared up for alpha testing at the moment.
