Actually, even though it started out as a separate game, it became an official Contra game. It was referenced in both Contra III which preceded it (Neocity was the town that got destroyed, and was the name of the town in Contra Force), but also Contra 4. A track from Force was also used in Contra ReBirth.

This opinion doesn't seem to be popular, but I actually like this design. Sure, the barbarian look is fine, but this redesign just clicks for me. Maybe it is because it reminds me of Fuuma Getsu, which is what Kojima was probably going for.
