An alternative to ZniggED is the old version of PyxelEdit, which isn't as user-friendly but lets you easily grab the tiles from other rooms or other Spectrum games.

>File -> Import Image
>select the image whose tiles you want to borrow. set the tile size to 8x8, the offsets to 0 and check "Identify Tiles"
>to use the Spectrum's palette, Color -> Clear Palette, then Color -> Import From Image, using pic related as the image

You do need to make absolutely sure you're following the tile limits of the Spectrum (2 colors per block, don't mix bright and dark colors except with black) and that you didn't rotate any tiles by accident. You can check for the latter by saving and re-importing your image

These. You also cannot mix a dark color and a bright color.

This game is making me appreciate the Amstrad's 4 color mode. The lack of attribute restrictions makes it easier to work and most Spectrum games didn't even use that many colors at once.

You can choose two colours, one for the paper and one for the ink (foreground and background). I think only the ink has the full array of 8 dark + 8 bright, while the background is just 8 dark.
