I prefer his personality in the cartoon over his personality in the Mario movie. The overall mid-90's CGI style fit perfectly with the games, too.

Have you played the Donkey Kong Country games? They have a similar tone and atmosphere (especially DKC3), but they're more linear and the collecting is optional. Most people compare them to the Crash Bandicoot games even though they are made by Rare. I would say play the Donkey Kong Country games first, then come back to Banjo, and if you're still not enjoying it then skip to DKCR for the Wii. It also contains some elements from Banjo, but again, they are optional.
