Star Ocean Two was so comfy that everything that came after was a disappointment.

The Second Story really was a love letter to SNES JRPGS - it was spiritually an old school SNES title with the added benefit of the PSX discs greater storage capacity.

The janky shit is what made Star Ocean the Second Story so memorable. The crafting system, pick pocketing, character affinities, private actions, terrible voice acting, massive side quests, the bonus dungeon - it all came together to make an experience that was unlike any other JRPG of the era.

The first two hours are a wall of text simulator.

Tough it out through that and you'll enjoy the ride. I preferred the real time with pause combat style in this game over the turn based final fantasy series.
