I think OP's point is that Pokemon is a game that could only ever achieve what it did on handhelds. You could have a monster collecting game on consoles (and stuff like SMT existed of course), but you would lose a lot without actually meeting people in person to trade and battle. In as sense it made kids feel like they were living as Pokemon trainers themselves, bringing their Pokemon (Pocket Monsters) around with them. Between that and the virtual pet elements, the game needed to be on handhelds to give the full experience.

I replayed it a couple years ago, enjoyed it more than I expected. The dungeons and map design are more interesting than the most recent games I think. If you like old RPGs you'll probably have fun with it still. Pokemon Stadium is great too, so you can have fun with that definitely. It gives a nice post-game experience after playing the Game Boy games.

For multiplayer, you're probably not going to have much luck finding people to play with using a link cable. There's still people who battle online using simulators though if you ever want to try that.
Even though the game is unbalanced and most teams have the same top pokemon, battling other people can be more fun that you'd expect. I prefer it over Gen 2 in that regard.

Pokemon was a project Satoshi Tajiri dreamt about making for years before it was developed. It was something created with passion, not just a soulless money-grab. You could argue that about the merchandising that came afterwards, but the game was pure.

I don't think the new games are soulless either, I still love the newer gens. As far as the designs go, there's good and bad in each generation. I actually like the simple designs in Gen 1 though, so even stuff like Seel is cool with me.
