To the end user, a source port is effectively a game engine replacement, and the goals between all of them differ. For Doom it's very easy to start using one because all the game data for a single game is stored on one file, and you just need to put that file into the root directory for the source port you want.

Quake has source ports as well. But just use Quakespasm for single player.

>I'm using DOSBox for an old DOS version of Doom
There's no good reason to be playing straight DOSBox these days. Get Chocolate Doom if you want that classic experience.

The usual argument against buying the original Doom games is that nobody on the original team works at id Software anymore, so your money would likely end up going to either Bethesda or Zenimax.

If you download a source port and want to use it, you also need the core game files. Thankfully both Doom and Doom 2 store their data in one file each (or IWAD) that are only mere megabytes, which in turn probably makes them some of the easiest games to pirate.

Best way to go around Q1 solo is Quakespasm. More information in the OP.

>Remastered music in Doom

You can use the BASSMIDI frontend + soundfont to improvise the quality of the original MIDI files, though there are some pre-recorded versions somewhere done from a real SC-55.

Not quite, ZDoom and ZDoom based ports run all monsters, items etc with Decorate, making for near endless modding potential. The drawback is that this is slower, and if there's a fuckton of monsters in a map, you will experience noticeable slowdown.

Oh, another ZDoom derivative port was ZDaemon. It's still around, and it actually has a lot of players, but it's super dated in terms of code and can't really do very much cool or advanced shit, at least not compared to modern day ZDoom.

Odamex exists but nobody plays that.

Risen3D was another thing which everyone sort of forgot about.

Doomsday has some cool rendering but it can't do all the shit ZDoom can do. Very pretty lighting though.

And I can't even remember what the hell Legacy did, or Vavoom, which I just remembered existed.

Tweaked the Doom sourceport guide a little.

Green/red text now has a black border around it for easier readability, background has much less contrast and is slightly desaturated, ZDoom logo cleaned up.
