Is it just me or is this game too kiddy to get into

Just gave this game a second chance. Played the new PC port in widescreen, with uncapped FPS, skippable dialogue boxes, better controls, basically everything I could possibly do to improve the experience of the base game. Last thing I remember before waking up in a puddle of my own drool was getting to Hyrule Castle.

About to start this.
Will I need a walkthrough? I don't like cryptic games

This extremely popular game was actually terrible and you're an idiot for liking it.
I'll take my 300 (you)s now thanks.

I find this game intensely boring. Why is it so popular?

what exactly is meant to have been revolutionary about this game?

it was one of the earlier home console games to use target lock but other than that i don't see it. in fact it's a pretty pedestrian translation of a link to the past to 3D. i guess that in itself is meant to be revolutionary?

i also don't see how it's supposed to have influenced so many games. i can't think of any games that closely imitate it. uncharted for instance doesn't inherit its autojumping and owes more to tomb raider than it does to ocarina of time

Unlike pic related with 4 minutes of unskippable cutscenes that make you press A a bunch of times to skip over the dialog.
Play Rayman 2 on N64. Same shit.
Play it on PS1, you can skip over the entire FMV.

What is the best way to play this on PC currently? I've heard Project 64 being mentioned, but are there any good FPS increase patches and reshaders /vr/ would recommend? Also any recs on controller re-mapping, I want to do what I can to avoid hating it the first time through.

The fact that so many publications still name Ocarina of Time as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" adventure game ever only tells you how far video games are from becoming a serious art. RPG fans have long recognized that the greatest role-playing games of all time are Planescape: Torment and SaGa Frontier, which were not the most famous or grandest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Shmup fans rank the highly controversial Ikaruga over classical shooters which were highly popular in arcades around Japan. So-called "retro gamers," instead, are still blinded by commercial success. Ocarina of Time sold more than anyone else (not true; by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. RPG fans grow up playing a lot of role-playing games of the past. Shmup fans grow up playing and replaying a lot of shooters of the past. "Retro gamers" are often totally ignorant of the games of the past, they barely know the best sellers.

In a sense, Zelda is emblematic of the status of video game criticism as a whole: too much attention paid to linear spectacle and too little to the merits of mechanically-deep systems of real video games. If somebody programs the most divine video game but no major publisher picks him up and sells him around the world, most "retro gamers" will ignore him. If a major publisher picks up a developer whose output is as generic as can be but launches it worldwide, your average "retro gamer" will waste thousands of hours on it. This is the sad status of video game discourse: Retro gamers are basically publicists operating as jannies for the big publishers, websites, and storefronts. They simply highlight what product the games industry wants to make money from.

Hopefully, one not-too-distant day, there will be a clear demarcation between a great video game, like Mischief Makers, which never sold much, and commercial products like Ocarina of Time.

Why does this game handhold the player so much

Its absolutely OoT. Every single console zelda afterwards until BotW took so much from it. Zelda was defined by the item > dungeon formula OoT created for nearly 20 years, and the combat for the other games was taken directly from OoT until Skyward Sword came out. It also introduced Ganondorf for the first time, who is much more recognizable than Ganon and appeared in tons of games afterwards. The OoT Link design is the default when most people think of Link, or the Twilight Princess design which was extremely similar. Nearly every 3D zelda also has some plot references to characters or ideas that were established in OoT as well.

Breath of the Wild might take its place in time but we'll see. It hasn't had time to build a legacy yet since its still the newest Zelda, other than BotW link being in smash bros.

Let's be honest here, this isn't even a top 10 N64 game, it is vastly overrated. One could even stretch that to 15.

Okay, I have a weird question for you guys.

Ocarina of Time launched when I was a kid, and my dad picked it up on launch day. They had some kind of promo where the first few people who bought it also got a Triforce necklace. It was square/rectangular with a raised triforce on it.

I've been trying to find a picture of this promo necklace for hours and I can't even tell if it fucking exists.

Does anybody else remember this shit or was this just a local giveaway and I've been telling people about some launch promo that Nintendo did that wasn't even them and was just the store I got it at? Or am I just imagining that this ever existed, since I lost it within a year?
