What was the first game to have a "lock-on" mechanic?

I'm 38 and I've played this for the first time ever last year around the same time and I enjoyed it a lot even though I have 0 nostalgia for it (PC gamer). This game still holds up BUT I dropped it once Link becomes an adult. I think the entire game kinda changes and it feels very different and just isn't fun anymore. What's going on besides me getting filtered? I'm thinking of picking up my save from last year.

Is there a reason this game isn't more highly regarded?

I beat OoT. What now? The obvious choice is between MM, WW and TP. How do they compare to Ocarina—like, what do they change? I liked the game a lot, but got really tired of cryptic sidequests that I constantly needed a guide for. I was told that MM is exactly like that, so I'm perhaps skipping it. As for the rest, I just wish running between parts didn't take that long, and there was a bit more/better combat, so I'd prefer a game that does that. (as for 2D, I beat ALLTP and AW already, thought about Oracle games but not sold on them yet)

Playing it for the first time, and I'm not very impressed. Even ignoring a lot of the dated aspects, it feels boring and uninspired, especially in the story department.

Is it really a "I had to be there" kind of thing? FWIW, I really enjoyed Majora's Mask, and I think it's the better game (at least so far)

daggerfall and morrowind had better dungeons. Half of the dungeons in this game are straight lines that feel like they're for babies

Ocarina of Time is the most overrated game in the history of vidya.

Went in expecting the best game of all time.

Actually got a puzzle game for 8 year olds.

I mean, it's fine I guess but it's not even the best game of 1998, let alone of all time.

How can a game as average and inoffensive as this be so beloved?
