There were supposed to be 3 hidden Switches in some walls, which would have lead to a secret level. Nintendo didn't want any incredibly hard to find secrets in the game, as that would cut down on Cartridge Space for something most players wouldn't even see. (Ironically enough the old NES games were full of that crap.) Theres an unfinished version of this secret in a fan made port fpr the PC. You can find the Switches, but they don't do jack shit. Fun bit of trivia, though.
