Just to point out, but the amount of 'overscan' may depend on the specific device being used. For example, my PS2 'overscans' quite a lot the bottom of the picture, and only it does so. The built-in VCR of my TV does NOT do this given that its picture matches the screen perfectly, and neither does my PS1. However, both my PS1 and 2 tend to overscan the left side of the picture on my TV. Here are photos of the overscan the PS2 is set into and how it should look like with screen adjustment, which not all games include, unfortunately.
