CotM, 64, and Aria are all kind of tied for first place for me.

Castlevania 64 totally nails the dark, gothic-y tone perfectly. Most other games in the series look either too fantastical or cartoonist, but C64 gets it just right.

For one thing, I love the look and tone of C64. It feels more "grounded" than other Castlevania games, the places that you go to feel less fantastical in some way than the other games in the series. I also love dark/Gothic settings and 90s style 3D graphics so C64 hits that sweet spot for me. Villa is one of my favorite levels in any game, It just oozes with atmosphere and I love the music.

I like how some levels are more wide open and some are more linear. Its neat that some levels have NPCs that you can talk to, and all of them are important for the story. The combat is fast and exciting and it never gets too hard or annoying. The platforming is the weakest part of the games, but it's manageable. Overall I absolutely love Castlevania 64, and I don't care that most people hate it.

Why the purple walls then? And why is the moss neon green? A color that's used for toxic sludge. Other game on the system don't have this problem. Pic related - moss that looks like moss.
