>It's 2021, you can get a Saturn easily enough and enjoy its library either through an ODE, or by burning CD-Rs with a modchip. The system is pretty accessible these days if you don't care about collecting original discs.

Exactly. I paid $99 shipped for pic related earlier this year. I bought a MODE, but you can get a PSK cart for like $40 that will let you play burned games, and CDRs are cheap as shit.

Basically for a $150 investment you can have more games than you will ever have time to play. If you can't afford $150 than mow some lawns or get a fucking mcjob.

Saturn is based.

I'm planning on firing up Shining Force III for the first time, but I'm worried, because my memory cart wiped itself once before after I swapped it for a RAM cart to play some Street Fighter. I have a MODE so I think the plan is to just save to the cart, and save to the console, and then backup the console save to a microSD card on a regular basis.

> Fellow Japanese Saturn owning bro

Based. I picked up pic related last year to replace one I had to sell a few years ago when I hit some hard times financially. I didn't want to pay ridiculous prices for physical games, so I picked up a MODE and have been loving it ever since. I also snagged a white 3d control pad and an official 1MB and 4MB RAM cart. I also picked up a Netlink and a cheap VOIP router to give online play a shot at some point.

> What are you playing
I just finished the English translation of SotN. It was interesting to see the differences between the US PS1 version and the Japanese Saturn version. I've also been playing Darius Gaiden for the first time and I'm having fun even though I suck ass at shooters. Also, playing Sega Rally from time to time because it's literally the perfect game.

> Sonic Jam worth picking up
Not for the price people are asking for a physical copy. Spend your money on an ODE instead. That said, it's a lot of fun playing classic Sonic games (even if they have a few slight differences from the Genesis versions), and it's one of the few ways to be able to play S3&K.

NiGHTs comes from an era where you were expected to actually read the manual before playing the game, instead of the modern game design where the first half hour is a hand-holding tutorial.

Most people who think Nights is a shitty game don't actually know how to play it, and they get confused and think it's just about flying in circles.

Jap Saturn chads RISE UP

You're fine, Japanese Saturns can run on 120v without issue (both regions share power supplies). You can also grab a mobius replacement PSU for like $80 if you ever run into trouble with your power supply and aren't capable of recapping it.

MODE is civilization. My advice to you is to only use redump images (they are an example of what can happen when the power of intense autism is harnessed for good), and only put games on your SD card/hard drive/USB stick that you know you will play, or know you will want to play. If you just throw the entire US/PAL/JAP catalogue onto your storage device you're gonna be hit with decision paralysis hard every time you boot it up, and it'll also take fucking forever to scroll through the menu.

Also, MODE can backup the Saturn's internal memory to an SD card now, so make sure to back up your saves every once in a while in case your battery dies (or you need to do a swap).

Right on. Have you ever owned a Saturn before? There are a couple of recommended games infographics floating around /vr/, but you could always just make a thread when you get it if you're not sure what to play. As for disc images, there are a lot of shitty CDI and ISO rips floating around on the internet, but your best bet is to get your games directly from the Redump set. They are a bunch of gran autismos so the disc images are essentially perfect 1:1 copies. Don't be a doofus and just throw the entire software library on your storage device though, when it comes to an ODE you only want to put games on it that you know that you will want to play, or you are interested in trying. Throwing hundreds of regional duplicates and junk games onto your system will just increase decision paralysis and make it take forever to scroll through your game list to get to a game you actually want to play.

Don't forget to grab a CR-2032 battery (the common "watch battery"), you'll need it to save your games if you didn't order a memory cart (which you should do, they're cheap as shit online).

If you're into 2D Capcom fighters than you'll definitely also want to pick up a 4MB RAM expansion cart. There was also a 1MB expansion cart, but for the most part you can play those games with a 4MB cart without issue (some 1MB games can occasionally have glitched sprites with a 4MB cart, and Metal Slug can have additional slowdown with a 4MB cart, but it's nothing game breaking). When I added my games to my MODE, I added a (1MB) or (4MB) to the end of the title so I could remember which games need what cartridge.

I'd also recommend picking up an S-Video cable if your TV supports it, but keep in mind that sharpening the display image via S-Video can sometimes increase the obviousness of certain mesh based transparency effects in some games (that would otherwise be blurred if you were using composite video).

Congratulations though, you're in for a treat when that thing arrives.

I paid $99.99 shipped from Japan for pic related a couple of months ago.

There seem to be a lot of "JPN console, controller, couple of random games, sometimes a memory cart" bundles for $100-$120 on Ebay. Amusingly enough the cost of a weeb console is significantly less than the cost of a US one. Your best bet is to pick up an ODE, but if you're not interested in spending hundreds on a MODE or waiting for a cheaper model 2 solution that doesn't involve camping some dude's wordpress blog waiting for sales to open up than something like this, a $40 pseudosaturn cartridge, and a stack of CDRs is all you'll need.

> Japanese Saturns are now dirt cheap on Ebay
> The only issue is being in a different region
> Device to fix this problem is only $30-$40 (and can be made yourself if you have the right hardware)

I'm surprised I don't see more Japanese Saturns in people's collections. You can get a system only model one for like $80, and a White model 2 with some games and a memory cart for not much more (pic related was $99 shipped).

> Just ordered a Japanese Saturn (pic related) plus a psuedosaturn cart

I had a modded Saturn with a huge collection that I had to sell a decade ago because I was young and couldn't into personal finance, I'm pretty stoked to be able to pick another one up.

I'm gonna use the cart until I decide to chip it for real or someone releases an ODE that works with Model 2s.

Burning discs in 2020 is gonna be weird, but I can't decide what I'm gonna play first.
