Look up Roger Caillois, and the distinction between the two objective-based playforms: Agon (deterministic, objective-based competition) and Alea (randomized outcomes).

To sum it up, Agon and Alea get in the way of one another and players of a game that combine both pick one and change the ruleset to mitigate the other. That's why White and Black switch sides after every chess game and play long series instead of individual games - to mitigate chance. And that's why card-counting is illegal in Blackjack - to mitigate skill.

Also Smash has enough depth to be able to afford a haircut. Partially uninformed decisions have a place in competitive games so long as it can be mitigated by a mind-game (something I like to call "intelligent uncertainty" and that David Sirlin has popularly called "yomi"), but fairness implies not only a balanced approach, it implies that everyone involved is equally affected by chance. Every item system in SSB history precludes that case, although tournaments have tried unsuccessfully to implement item lists in the ruleset that did not too severely reward the player that received them.
