The chips were mostly to help he SNES render 3D, which the N64 was designed to do from the beginning so it really wasn't necessary. Their real problem was RAM, hence the expansion pak that you needed to play Majora's mask and Perfect Dark among others. But that was more of a console add-on

There *are* worse RPGS but most of them weren't made by a company that was capable of doing better and shit out a bland mediocrity on purpose just to cater to people they assumed were too stupid to playa a proper game.

It' not the just the quality that's an issue, it's the pandering and low expectations implicit in the concept

The other anon might have had a point about event triggers. Did you have the conversation with the 2 dudes at 3:10 in the video? Did you talk to the guy in the weapons shop?

>Street Fighter (whichever).

If you're gonna play Street Fighter might as well go for Super Street Fighter and get the biggest roster possible on the SNES, I don't think the cart is any more expensive than the other ones

I enjoy replaying it but I think the first playthrough is the best one because you don't know know anything yet and figuring out how to progress is half the fu. Although I guess it depends on how badly certain areas filter you. Getting stuck is frustrating but I never had too much trouble except for maridia. That place had me running in circles for a while

>many games were downgraded arcade games

Yeah a lot of its appeal at the time was the fact that it let you play arcade games at home which was a big fucking deal back when video games themselves were still a novelty. But there's no real reason to play an inferior port now that the arcade versions themselves are available so a lot of the best games in the Atari catalog are kind of redundant.

Atari (and to some extent colecovision / Intellivision, etc.) occupies a weird place in retro gaming history because more than any other console its appeal was almost entirely context-dependent. I'm old enough to have been there and let me tell you, at the time, that shit was MAGIC. Now we compare it unfavorably to what came after but people have to remember this was going from literally nothing to something. Compared to board games and electric football, this was unfathomably hot shit.

The novelty factor is impossible to replicate now so all you have are the games themselves which are admittedly rough. But the fact that we can play these decades later and still enjoy them at all is kind of amazing. It's like looking at baby pictures of someone you know as an adult. The grown up version is more capable in every way but it's interesting to see how it started because it shows how much growth there was

It played really well but yeah, there's just something about 2.5D that's off compared to actual 2D. But since it includes the original version of Rondo and a mostly faithful port of SOTN or free as an unlockables there's really no reason to complain. It's a nice overall package even if you don't think the game needed a remake

I've never actually bought anything used for more than its original retial price. I'm old enough to have lived through the times when there were still video stores who did inventory purges of last-gen stuff and thrift stores didn't know any better and just priced everything to move. I once found a copy of MVC2 for the ps2 at the local pawn shop for $9. Pretty sure I got my copy of SOTN for like $5. And some of the stuff I just got when I was a kid and never got rid of. Still have my SNES from high school.

I hate that I never got to play V when it was released initially. I can appreciate it for what it is now but it's just not the same as would have been if I'd got to play it in the 90's directly after IV. I still don't get the decision to only release it Japan. IV didn't sell *that* great in the US but people did buy it.
