This is an example of a print ad that sold me on the game alone. I had no idea what it was or that it existed but seeing this in Official PlayStation Magazine convinced me.

On a happier note I'm a sucker for really good print ads. I didn't even know Star Ocean was a thing before seeing this ad but I just needed to play the game after seeing it. Working Designs also sold me on several games just because the ads caught my eye as I flipped through a magazine.

Not going to lie. Seeing this advertisement in Official PlayStation Magazine back in the day made me get the game despite not knowing of it's existence prior. I think it's a game designed for a world without GameFAQs or even strategy guides. The idea being that you SHOULDN'T know how many endings or private actions exist or how many items can be crafted. You're just supposed to do stuff and then find out your friend had a completely different inventory and endings and so on. It's meant to come off as boundless even down to your party makeup.

Necessity driven by constraints. Most games didn't get TV commercials and Internet advertising was in it's infancy. So chances are the only thing you had at your disposal was an advertisement in game magazines. You had to make it count. Star Ocean's ad in Official PlayStation Magazine worked well enough that it both sold me on the game and showed me that it even existed in the first place.

Final Fantasy 8. It was my first FF. I like gunblades and renzokukens.

Star Ocean 2. I was mainly drawn in because of the guy with two huge dragons on his back. I stayed for the characters, music and pear into peaches.

Metal Max 2 Reloaded. A JRPG that keeps it simple. Do whatever you want. You can run from anything, even bosses. Tanks are cool. Tanks with 5 canons on it that can all fire at the same time are 5x as cool.

Sometimes print ads sold me on the game. Didn't even know it existed until seeing this.

I didn't know the game existed until I saw this in Official PlayStation Magazine and had to have it.

The print ad worked on me. I knew nothing about the game, saw this in a 1999 issue of Official PlayStation Magazine, the one that came with the FFVIII demo, and immediately had to play it.
