Apparently it was always a thing among cartoonists and animators and such. At least that's where there's some pre-internet signs of it, what with people within the profession corresponding and working with each other. It's not a massively great comparison, but I feel it's a bit like how there was always enough grapevine-info that in-the-know paedos knew to gravitate toward the catholic church.
