Did people ever like Atari 2600, even at the time? It seemed like a big cope. All the games were advertised as being "like the arcades", but they never were even remotely of that quality, even to a casual player. It seems like people have Stockholm syndrome for this console. Even though it's a fact that the games are terrible and crashed the home game industry. Can we just stop being contrarians chumps and admit that home games didn't actually get good until Nintendo Famicom? It's a piece of gaming history, but it absolutely does not deserve to be glorified on the same level as Golden Age Arcade, which is a completely different thing.

First console game I remember playing was Pac-Man.

I like it for that reason. A modern game's quality has so many variables - the graphics, the soundtrack, the length, the performance, the DLC practices - that it's easy to lose sight of whether the core gameplay is any good or even what exactly you're supposed to be doing. 2t600 games have no fluff. There's just you and the game, you can see all the interlocking parts of the gameplay system, and either that system is fun or it's not.

I'd even argue that the Pac-Man port is bad not because of its graphics, but because of the maze design.

But mostly by an over eager but old school marketing division that was in no way in tune with the developers and the market itself, thinking they could just go on selling and selling any product regardless of quality reflected by tighter and tighter dev times, and any reasonable demand.
I mean, these were the geniuses that rushed an incomplete prototype of Pac-Man to the market to meet a Christmas deadline, and had 12 million copies printed despite there being only 10 million Atari 2600 sold. Say what you will about the fratboy hippy stoner culture that was going on with the developers, as far as marketing and CEOs went, cocaine's a helluva drug.

Most 2600 games were pretty terrible to begin with. Yes E.T. was bad. You have 100% freedom to download and check it out for yourself.

It may be the worst Pac Man port of all time, but I still find it fun.
