Sonic's designs seem unoriginal and trendy to me. Pretty standard anthropomorphic design with some "90s cool" flair like his smirk and shoes. The only unique thing is the blue color, a marketing gimmick.

Crash looked and acted like he was supposed to be an energy drink mascot. The gloves and sneakers are especially dated.

Both of them remind me of the kind of stuff Poochy lampoons.

Are we talking strictly about video games? Cartoons like DuckTales and Alvin and the Chipmunks were massively popular well before Sonic, and probably had a big influence on his design.
