I keep trying to get people into it since high school. That was 14 years ago. I managed to get people into HoMM, I managed to get people into EU and HoI, I even convinced some into AoW and Original War... but no matter what, I had zero luck trying to get anyone into SMAC.
The best part is that I'm no pro in it anyway, so I assume if I would pick a net invitation with random person still interested in playing the game in 2020, I would be utterly crushed within first 100 turns.

Rather than having a discussion about fluff, let's talk about game mechanics. The threads on Apolyton and other forums are dead for quite a while, but unfortunately not all questions and issues are answered, leaving me with a guess work, while there is always /vr/ to ask and consult.
Either way, let's have a talk about game mechanics instead of the usual bickering about various factions.

The struggle is real. I managed to convince one (1) of them to try it and he only played it once, to get into lore and all the memes. We still had a nice chat about the game, setting and certain implications of it, but he only played it once.

how do i git gud at combat in this game?

i started a game earlier as the stepdaughters, which was bad idea #1. i was all excited to launch a major naval assault on my neighbours, the morganites, except that i found out too late that foils apparently cannot take coastal cities: bad idea #2. then my impact teams basically could not get anything done on their own. a boring stalemate ensued. i'm probably going to have to restart a new game at this point.

combat and war-planning strategies, i need them.
