To be fair, as terrible as their humor is the balance rework is much better. Enemies are tough and bosses can be a challenge that will drain all your resources but there is zero grinding ever necessary. It means you have to actually be smart a little. The original is just a cakewalk no matter what you do.

Which version of 4 were you playing? Also remember most old school rpgs are designed with grinding in mind. The ones like pic related (US version) where you can play straight and have a decent but beatable challenge with no grinding are surprisingly rare.

100+ hours of "gameplay" used to be a huge selling feature, even if 50 of those hours were spent doing the repetitive boring actions over and over.

Grinding is hardly a purely vr phenomenon. But many people will grind in games where it's not necessary and then complain.

Of the games I've played only a few hit that sweet spot, but the US version of Lunar 2 is near perfect for it. I had situations like this several times including the end boss and it was epic.

Phantasy Star 4 is also pretty good, but I am curious if any of you know other games that are like this.
