Xenogears probably has one of the most ambitious plots and settings you will find in a jrpg. The worldbuilding, lore and atmosphere are top notch, and it has one of the best love stories in an rpg ever. Great music too.
But there is a fuckton of slow text, the game turns into a VN in the last 30%, and you'll have no idea what is happening in the first 20 hours of the game. It's a slow burn that builds up into an epic story that spans thousands of years, but you really need a lot of patience for it.

Played both, both are great. But very different, so hard to make a fair comparison
but IMO Xenogears executes better and stays interesting, while Planescape gets boring much sooner. And Xenogears has Elly

engine upgrades for your gears is #1 priority. in addition, the game only bases it's engine recommendations on fuel capacity, not power, so it tries to trick you a few times.

always look at the engine power when deciding on an engine, and always get the most powerful one.

good: amazing soundtrack, characters, plot, worldbuilding/lore, and giant robots with kung-fu. I shit you not, the antagonist alone has more depth and motivation than most rpg's entire main casts.

the bad: it's ugly, the camera is wonky, and you have to play it a second time to understand what's going on.
