Many levels made nowdays even assume mouselook anyway. It makes the controls better, do you play in the tiny resolution as well? "Breaking the level" would be more jumping over things you were not meant to or couching to dodge projectiles.

In the early releases of doom, there was not even strafing. Check the logs.
