It also had a solid software attach rate. That's where the margins are.
Also Nintendo handhelds of the time were extremely successful so they had something to fall back on.

do we ever ask ourselves why we want more? we know what it's going to lead to. remasters that are created to capitalize on the past that come with changes which are generally disliked. i feel like this shit ends up dividing us further. so much of these games are a "you had to be there" experience. i don't know why you want them to revisit the past again. we have what we have and obviously capcom is over it. hate to play devils advocate but i swear everytime something is dug from the grave and put back on display it feels like a cheap imitation that mocks the original intentions then the existing fanbase coagulates in all these fucked up ways.

desu I was in the same boat. I was 14 when DS released, of course I didn't know much about vidya market back then. I pulled the trigger on buying DS when PSP was still up and coming. turned out PSP would cost much cheaper then I expected and I really regretted not getting it at first.
if you remember the early days of DS, it was pretty lame. SM64 and WarioWare was all that I played. I read a review of every new game, and it was looking pretty grim—there were many shitty touchscreen gimmick games at first, and just plain shovelware. at best you got something like True Swing Golf, at worst it was Sprung and Elf Bowling. and PSP was already promising GTA and lots of other stuff. it felt like DS could become a dommed shitty gimmick platform.
but then it suddenly started getting lots of cool games, like MK64, Osu!, NSMB, Castlevanias, Pokemon, etc.. and on the other hand, PSP suddenly turned out not quite great, with lower effort versions of PS games like MGS, Silent Hill, etc..
it felt crazy to me, but not only DS didn't get steamrolled, but it exploded in popularity and somehow btfod PSP in almost every region.

Nintendo literally mindbreaks people. We have autists thinking about it 24/7. Some of them have a Miyamoto dartboard and shit on it on /vr/ all damn day and then there's the exact opposite, people who exclusively play games that came out on Nintendo consoles. The latter are the ones who claim that Mega Man 8 and Castlevania Bloodlines are bad and stuff like that
