There is some marketing from Sony but that article is from PS2 launch era. Interlacing is the reason people had issues with jaggies, so it was a problem as soon as it was released. That's the reason devs were forced to add de-flicker filter, people were complaining about how terrible it looked.
EDTV was a thing, even Sony released them, and were releasing LCD. It was the stupid to design console like that.
