I want to replay Dragon Warrior IV, but I want to do something different this time. I thought a "no shops" challenge would be nice, but I wonder if that would be enjoyable at all.

Have any of you done it? Is the game beatable using only the equipment you find in chests? Without literal hours of grinding I mean.

The DS version was the first game I played, but I can't stand it now. I tried playing in Japanese now that I can understand it, but the pacing just feels wrong... On top of that, you have to deal with the stupid double screen.

I should play the PS1 remake some day. As far as I know, the pacing is slightly different from the original but not an absolute disaster. I don't know a thing about PS1 emulation, though.

Questionable, if you can read nip they're pretty good. The translations are kinda spotty but they're still recommended. For V I reccomend the PS2 version. For IV I have to say the DS remake is the best option for English only speakers. I'm actually playing IV NES at the moment and might have to say I recommend the DS version over it, I only just started chapter 5 so my opinion isn't completely formed yet. For IV either version is fine, up to you really. I haven't played VI but I almost universally hear the DS version is the best option.

I believe so, found it with a bunch of official art. I'll post some cool ones, not sure if theae are all by Toriyama but they were used officially in some way.
