>cover shooter
If you want to dumb it down and liken it to the 2010s trend of games where you press a button to stick yourself to a predetermined level object to stay in a single place for minutes on end, sure.

Or you could use the vast amounts of explosive ordnance the game gives you to clear corners and breaches, and instead of lingering by the same cover for longer periods of time (which often involves getting killed), you stay mobile. Caleb can't tank a lot of damage, gunshots and bombs hurt, but the thing is that he carries a useful arsenal, and he's very fast.
If you jump around and strafe, that means enemies will have a harder time maintaining their sights on you, if crouch down, they'll crouch down too to make themselves a smaller target and to get their sights on you again.

Do you see how in this .webm, the player takes only a single point of damage from the explosion he narrowly avoids, and then guns down those guys around the corner while they're busy reacting to the explosions he sent their own way? That's not luck, that isn't even him knowing the level and that there's guys behind the corner, that's him knowing how to fight against the AI, how to dodge fire and how and when to go on the offensive.

Blood is pretty hard (certainly harder than Doom and Doom 2), but there's a logic to it as well. When you crouch, that offsets the aim of cultists with guns, and they have to stop and crouch to take aim at you again, similarly for jumping, thus with frequent jumping and crouching, you can actually avoid a fair bit of gunfire, often most, and that's the stuff which tends to hurt the most. One can still slip, however.
Popping in and out of cover, as well as bouncing dynamite around corners, is a very helpful approach as well.

I would say however that Final Doom's The Plutonia Experiment on Nightmare! difficulty is quite a lot harder than Blood, because only a handful of people can actually beat that at all (until about a year ago, only a single guy in the world could).

>2nd easiest difficulty
Was this on a sourceport or in DosBox? Because the original .exe has a bug where if you load a save, the health values and damage values are flipped to the 'opposite' difficulty. So if you die and then load a save on second easiest, what happens is that enemies are bumped up to the health and damage output of the second hardest difficulty (with nothing happening on medium), and this only resets when you exit the level.

The oldschool approach was to just save at the exit of a level and then try to do the levels in a single go, but sourceports fixes this bug (and also lets you customize difficulties).

Quick tips:
1; don't play on the highest difficulty level, it's designed for co-op only
2; in fact you should probably start on one of the first two difficulty levels if you aren't used to shooters playing hardball
3; avoid trying to tank damage, Caleb isn't sturdy, but he's very fast and agile, use jumping and ducking to confuse cultists and force them to shift their aim
4; sometimes diving for cover is fine, moving in and out of cover rapidly is viable
5; the game gives you a lot of dynamite, use it
6; zombies are only finally dead when you hear the AAAAAAAUUUUOOOORGH

>and you can't really dodge hitscan fire, you crouch and take cover, but come on now, you can't sidestep the code saying "Alright you're taking damage now, fuckboy."
You too, improve. See how he only takes *1* point of damage? That's because he knows how to dodge.

Jump and use cover a lot. The game gives you a lot of dynamite so don't be afraid of testing a corner or doorway by just throwing a bundle and listening for screams.
Also crouch a bunch, cultists struggle to hit you when you do that.

>You cant dodge or stunlock hitscanners in blood.
Nigger, duck, jump and strafe, run from cover to cover, don't stay out in the open and try to tank damage because Caleb isn't built to tank damage, he's built for speed and evasion.
Get low, then get high, get behind cover or out of the way as fire comes your way, then rush back out and return it.

>I mean sure on paper the mechanics are there but the problem is that youre not fighting them 1 on 1 with ideal conditions you are fighting groups so it becomes a game of damage minimization rather than avoidance,
Boohoo? It isn't fair? Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, and Shadow Warrior sure as hell didn't softball you with just one on one, nor did they constantly hand you ideal conditions.
A game is a challenge, of course conditions will get adverse and against your favor as it escalates.

If you mean me who posts this .webm sometimes, no, I haven't played Marathon.
I'm not really interested in trying it, because from what I've seen, the visual style is REALLY aesthetically boring, with really bland environments, worst is the high res textures, which really clashes with the simplistic level geometry, making it look oddly unreal and unpleasant. I don't think I could get immersed in a game like that.

It IS an argument. Just fucking crouch and dodge and shit, hitscanners are easy.

Notice how this guy faces off with guys with machineguns, shotguns, and dynamite, and how in this wild shootout, he takes exactly 1hp worth of damage, and they all die?

Blood is quite intense, it's VERY fun and exciting, but it's also quite challenging.
The enemies are real mean, and bullets hurt a LOT. Caleb is a glass cannon, so tanking damage is ill advised, though fragile, he can put out a lot of hurt (that's the cannon part), and he's VERY agile and limber.
His agility and mobility is key to staying alive, you need to jump, duck, strafe, pop in and out of cover, run from cover to cover while shooting, fall back from oncoming groups of enemies and then surprising them with heavy firepower.
This .webm is a good illustration. Notice that while he's beset with gunfire and bombs, he kills them all with just barely a scratch (1pt of damage). As said, mobility is key, and crouching repeatedly confuses the aim of cultists, also don't be afraid of using dynamite, there's plenty.
You are the One Man Blitzkrieg, and son of a bitch must pay!

Know that in the original .exe, if you load a game, the damage scaling gets inverted for the rest of the level, meaning on easy you get hardest damage scaling, and on hard you get easiest damage scaling, the oldschool way to get around this problem is to save at the end of every level and just try to take the levels on as a whole, which does its own to add to challenge, as Blood likes nasty ambushes.
BloodGDX solves this problem and lets you actually customize your difficulty level.

It's very fast, intense and challenging.

You're fragile, but so is most of the mooks, both of you have powerful weapons, but the player has the advantage of being very agile, limber and fast, which is what really allows you to succeed in combat.

Jump and duck a lot. Popping in and out of cover repeatedly is a good idea too.
The enemies have a hard time hitting you if you stay mobile and crouch and jump a bunch. Be mobile.
Don't be afraid of using cover, bullets REALLY hurt and you're NOT meant to tank damage, diving behind a pillar or corner, or ducking below a table or desk, can give you a split second of breathing room to allow you to succeed. Assume that there's something mean and evil waiting to hurt you when you're turning corners or passing doorways.
See the guy playing in this .webm? If he just stood still and started shooting, those mooks would have ventilated him in a few seconds, but because he was so mobile, he only suffers a small scratch (1hp) from the exploding dynamite near him.

Also, the original .exe has bugged damage scaling; if you load a saved game, on easy you'll get higher damage scaling against you, and on hard you'll get lower damage scaling against you. This lasts until you finish the level, prompting some people to save before the level exit, for the next one (personally I just gritted my teeth and pushed through it).
BloodGDX fixes this problem, even letting you customize your difficulty setting if you want.
