It has something to do with the messy pattern, stark contrasts, and the motion in relation to that, it makes the video encoding go potato. You can see a similar effect in Donkey Kong Country for the SNES, the snow in some levels will ruin bitrates like that and make the resolution really low and smudgy until the snow goes away.

I think it can be ok in small doses, but Mt. Erebus makes an entire building out of it, which is visually striking, but also garish and hideous.
Made worse by how this texture craps out video encoding.

Part of it I think is also how it's animated, it doesn't really move or anything, it kind of just blinks slowly between two brightness levels, which looks kind of cheap and crude.

It's hideous to look at, and when you record the animated texture to video or on a stream, the encoding will for some reason shit its pants so on the final video/audience end it will look like a smudgy low def soup until the view shifts away from the texture.

Pic related was 720p before the texture was in view, turned to this, then went back to 720p afterwards. I think it has something to do with the sharp contrast and the slow blinking, as well as it moving over the screen. It just doesn't want to record right digitally.

A texture.

It's gotten some infamy for the fact that it looks kind of ugly and garish, and for the fact that for video recording and streaming, the bright colors, the spotty pattern, and the blinking, fucking wrecks your bitrate (due to how encoders work), and for as long as it's on screen, your video/stream will look like 2005 era Youtube videos, even if you're recording in like 4k.

Makes your streams and videos pretty.

It's supposed to be some kind of flame or energy, obviously.

I love how when streaming or recording video, FIREBLU can turn crisp 720p video and make each video frame look like a deep fried .jpeg
