It came out at a time when JRPGs were still niche and ended up being a blockbuster that brought many other people to the genre. It will always be seen as a massive game because of that.

But that doesn't mean it's a game that is going to appeal to everyone. All tastes vary, it doesn't really matter. All I'm saying is that the tone and characters are pretty consistent, so if you've tried it a few times and don't like it then it probably just doesn't appeal.

I tired to get into DQs, IV, V and VI multiple times before just accepting that although there are many people who love what those games are doing, I'm not one of them. So whatever, there are plenty of other games out there.

playing through them in order, and finally got to THE BIG ONE. well at least according to some people. anything I need to know (that isn't a spoiler) before going in?

Nah, it's where people post anything and everything they can in the hopes that someone somewhere will get triggered by it and have a fit.

It's basically all of /vr/ condensed into one thread.

So I want to try to get into Dragon Quest again, and am going to go for one of the Super Famicom versions. Maybe with a translation patch, but I don't care about story at all so I might just go blind with pointers on what to do next.

Of the three, which has the most interesting options for how you build your party? That's the biggest thing for me at this point.
