Yeah. I started the other thread with the title "Bugs that make games better", or some such shit. A favorite quote of mine is:

"Last version was better. More bugs. Bugs make game fun." — Floyd

=========================

My contribution pertained to Tetris Attack.

Tetris Attack has a scoring bug that prevents chains greater than x13 from scoring. This may seem really annoying because skillful players can easily get more than x13. It feels like one is being cheated out of points, but it actually makes Endless much much better.

By itself, the bug would suck. However, in combination with a little known scoring mechanic known as a "bonus", great depth is added to the game. Bonuses are awarded when a player matches additional tiles elsewhere during a chain, with the total amount awarded being equal to the current value of the chain. By itself, a bonus is worthless because it is always better to continue on to the next chain. However, due to there being a cap on how big a chain you can usefully make, to maximize points one needs to rush to match bonuses once you get to x13. Bonuses make the difference between scoring ~9000pts for a x13, and scoring ~20000pts for a x13 with shit tons of bonuses at the end.

This adds a whole new dimension to the game's strategy that otherwise wouldn't be there, and is more of a feature than a bug.

Some other anon posted the straffing bug in Powerslave. Looks like he made his own thread after this one got canned.

Tetris Attack has a scoring bug that prevents chains greater than x13 from scoring any points.

At first, this might be annoying because one may feel that you are getting cheated out of points by getting x? or better. In actuality, it makes the endless mode much better.

Why this is so depends on a little know scoring method in TA called a bonus. Bonuses are rewarded for matching blocks during a chain. Typically there is no point to go for a bonus, because getting the next chain is always superior. However, when chains only usefully go up to x13, you have to rush to match bonuses at the end of a long chain to maximize your score.

This can mean the difference between a x13 netting you ~9000 points, and a x13 with shit tons of bonuses netting ~20000 points.

The shift in strategy at the end of chains adds incredible depth to TA. It's a bug that really should have been a feature.

Can you guys name any more?

I play this game like a violin.

To get good you just keep playing the CPU in vs until you can crush any difficulty in 15 seconds.

Once you get bored with Vs, endless becomes so much more fun. The game really shines in endless because of the great mix of game mechanics, scoring, and oddly enough bugs.

Most techniques you just have to feel out for yourself, but there are a couple that you can teach to others. Do you know what a "sneak" is? Do you know what the best way to build skill chains are?

Only 100+ hours separates you from flawless x13 chains and bonuses that will crush timers and leave your friends to despair.

Bust-a-Move on the NeoGeo machine down at the arcade was my love nest. It actually really pissed me off that people only knew about the shoddy knockoff of snood.

Never could figure out how to really play this game. Everyone seems to really like it, but I suck at it.

I'm not very creative. Tetris Attack and Tetris for me. I know I'm fucking good at TA, but wondering how good you dorks are. Can anyone here beat endless in 5 minutes or so?

I don't know about by normal standards, but this game will always be perfect in my eyes. Both the Japanese and USA versions.
