>The gameplay is very.. not engaging in just about any that I play.

Have you tried Deus Ex or System Shock 2? They're first person, so they may be a bit more engaging. Vampire Bloodlines is also first/third person and is fairly well-paced for an RPG.

Then again, I guess if you don't like them then you don't like them, but it's probably worth a shot. As much as I love isometric RPGs, being able to play in first person makes a game much more engaging than in an isometric view.

Getting back to shooters, what about Half-Life? Not fast-paced enough? Or how about the Quake 3 multiplayer that's always heralded as being a twitch shooter?

>I never played vampire: the masquerade, but didn't that game have some rather novel rpg mechanics?

It's kinda like Deus Ex.

>do stuff
>gain skills points for doing important stuff
>apply skill points to stats

You should totally play it, though. It's great. I never thought I'd like a vampire game, but by golly I fucking loved it.

Also, we just call it "Vampire Bloodlines" or VTMB. There's actually another Vampire: The Masquerade title that isn't Bloodlines, and it's less of a mouthful to use that or just say VTMB.
