It's honestly surprisingly decent for a corridor shooter on a 16-bit console. They do all they can to pack it with features, detail, and content, really trying to make the most of it.

My favorite detail of all is the snipers. You'll see what I mean eventually.
If it had been available as a PC title in early 1994, I think it would have done ok sales relative to many other shooters overshadowed by Doom and Heretic.
It's still a corridor shooter, but it has a lot of variety, more than Wolfenstein 3D.
Speaking of which, try out the Wolfenstein 3D homebrew at some point, even if just quickly, it's like 99.8% authentic to the original PC game, and without needing the 32X, seriously impressive stuff.

It's pretty cool. Not an exquisite shooter, but more than just playable, and it's very ambitious, chock full of attention to detail.

It's really cool, they shove as many bells and whistles into a corridor shooter for a 16-bit home console as they can think of, so it gives the game a bit more depth than it actually ends up having.

Cool shit in the game:
>use fire extinguishers to put out fires to pass through
>walls get busted up from gunshots and explosions
>blood splatter sticks to walls
>you can jump, but IIRC the only reason to ever actually jump is to to then crouch midair and then do a melee attack, producing a flying kick which is the only good way to hurt someone without weapons
>flamethrower is pretty gnarly, doesn't just kill the fuck out of weak enemies, their corpses become still smoldering piles of ashes
>in some parts you end up on a roof, and a sniper shoots at you from another roof, how? by making the sniper a graphic which is part of the sky texture! you can fucking see a little dude off in the distance, on top of a skyscraper, and he shoots at you, and you can duck down under low walls to avoid getting shot by him, and you can also fucking shoot him when he pops out to take aim at you!
>there's a flashlight, which when equipped lights up the center of the screen in front of you, there's little reason to have this item at all because nightvision lights up more of your screen, but it's there
>can be played multiplayer, with two consoles, two TVs, two game cartridges, and a link cable
>security cameras later on can alert all the enemies in the vicinity
Was a few years since I played it, the gameplay itself is kind of just ok, but I was blown away by all the attention to detail, and shit added just for the sake of having lots of shit, there was usually some novelty waiting in the next level that I wanted to discover (at least for most of it). It's a shame they never got to make a sequel, which could have been more refined (a leaked beta exists), the devs seemed pretty fucking ambitious.

One wonders what it would have been like on PC?

Someone did make a homebrew port of Wolfenstein 3D for the 32X, which ran better than the SNES version.
Only the first episode, but it ran like a top.

You also have Zero Tolerance (on just plain Genesis), which was really technically impressive, in spite of pretty much having no height variation.
I think you can totally do a decent first person shooter with a bit of effort.

Zero Tolerance is an extremely impressive game all things considered. It's a shame it never got a PC release or something because with a bit of higher resolution and mouse turning, I think this would be a fun little gem to go back to.
It's extremely ambitious for it's format though, in my own experience, it's only beaten by Rise Of The Triad for "Takes a basic corridor shooter and does as much as it can with the format"

>>4696083
It's kind of fun to just give it a roll, just because of how impressive it is. These guys must have been pretty damn familiar with the hardware to pull it off this tight. It really is one of the crown jewels of the Genesis library, for the technical aspects alone.

Necessary evil. If you fullscreened it, the Genesis would run it at like 4fps, the console is really not powerful enough for first person shooters in most cases, 16bit is extremely tight limits to work in, even Wolf3D had to be heavily chopped for the SNES, that wasn't just the censorship.
Doom needed the SuperFX chip on it's cartridge to even run on the SNES (and it runs abysmally), the Genesis would run it on the 32X, and actually get pretty decent performance (thanks to 32bit), but sacrificing a lot of content due to cartridge space limitations, also featuring awful music, because it was just converted and dumped without being adapted (the audio files were not compressed however, being crystal clear).

Even on computers people would make concessions on screen size to get better FPS.
For Duke Nukem 3D, to meet their goal of a consistent 20fps on all levels for contemporary computers, they decided to just shave some pixels off the the top of the screen, and that'd give them a few more frames.

ZT still uses screen real estate decently, the viewport is tiny, but you get an automap, an inventory, a message prompt, health and armor, and a character portrait.

Ah, Zero Tolerance, I played that a year or two ago. I found it oddly compelling, an extremely ambitious game.

>Still a really impressive game
Yeah, it does some flashy stuff for being a Wolf style corridor shooter on a 16 bit machine.
Makes me think a bit of Rise Of The Triad for all the neat features it has. It's very detailed, walls you can damage, blood splatter sticking to walls and slowly sliding down, etc.
I also liked how when you killed enemies with flamethrowers they'd turn into smoldering and smoking piles.
The snipers on the rooftop was a really cool thing too, like they'd only be able to shoot at you from certain positions, and they were an animated part of the sky texture, which was a really clever way to pull that off with a such a simple engine, they were really thinking outside the box to achieve all sorts of features.

Wish there was a proper port on PC with a higher resolution (and mouse turning).

Oh man, that game was really cool and detailed for being a corridor shooter.

I've always wondered what the game would have been like if there had been a port for PC.

Check out Totenkopf SDL, it's a very nice and well made 21 level campaign that I think basically is the epitome of the 'Corridor Shooter' kind of FPS as made popular by Wolfenstein 3D and Blake Stone.
You almost forget that everything is made out of perfect 90 degree angles with no height difference.

Zero Tolerance for the Sega Genesis is an interesting example of that style of game, it does a lot of interesting things. Not sure if I'd call it a really good game, but it does a lot of neat technical things you wouldn't expect from a 16 bit console FPS, lots of attention to detail.

If you haven't played them on the SNES, True Lies and Stargate are movie license games that are surprisingly good (especially given their routinely garbage publisher), once you learn the controls and the gameplay, they're really fun and intense (though fairly hard).

They're mostly the same as on the SNES, except with different sound, and different palette, obviously also controls (use a 6B controller for these).

There's a damn cool FPS game called Zero Tolerance, it's a corridor shooter like Wolfenstein 3D, except WAY more advanced and flashy. A ridiculous amount of ambition and attention to detail went into a game of this type, on this system, if you have an appreciation for old games on a technical level, it'll wow you here and there.

Shining Force is a fantastic classic, a tactical turn-based RPG, very easy to get into and very fun, gets fairly challenging at times.

Quackshot and Castlevania: Bloodlines was cool, as is Caliber .50

Looking at the 32X, it was a dumb flop at the time, but looking objectively at some of the individual games (and there honestly weren't many), detaching them from the idea of the addon itself, there's a few worth looking at.
There's Space Harrier (I haven't played this port, but you know the original is good, this can't be worse), there's a port of Doom which actually isn't TOO shabby if you turn off the music, and put on your own, (I suggest Black Sabbath, Metallica and Slayer), I'd say it's comparable to the Jaguar port in terms of gameplay.
There's also a port of After Burner which I'm told is arcade perfect, there's Cosmic Carnage, which is an interesting an unusual fighting game, alien convicts are stuck on a space ship and are fighting for the only remaining escape pod, before the ship explodes.
I never played Blackthorne much, but if you liked the original I don't think you'd hate this one.
I was never huge on Mortal Kombat, but there's a port of MK2 on it, which I don't know if it's any good.
