I'm probably autistic, because my backlog is essentially every video game from the dozen IPs I grew up loving the most, one of these IPs is Spider-Man, which is my favorite super hero by far, and I loved playing his PS1 installments... but his Master System/Game Gear stuff I downright resent. I grew up playing Return of the Sinister Six on NES, and nowadays I appreciate it quite a lot despite it's shortcomings, so when I saw that there was a SEGA version I just had to give it a shot... and they blew it, they ruined the moody atmosphere with the graphics, and it manages to control even worse, with enemies also being way less predictable and so frustrating to deal with... just not fun... and then there's Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin, the Genesis and SEGA CD versions were excellent, but here they decided to give you ONE GUY? NO CONTINUES? A ton of annoying enemies too, and always going back to the title screen is awful...

>What is the game you defend the most despite unpopular opinion?
Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six (1992/NES)

>Why?
Well, it's usually seen as something that controls poorly and has nothing to offer, especially for a 1992 NES release, with an OST of only 5 tracks and poor graphics. I find these complaints to be fair, but controls are easy to get used to and flow well once you do, webslinging can be fun and it feels like Spider-Man, it's also atmospheric due to that very same OST and look that are often criticize, more grim than usual, but it works. I also love how enemies explode when defeated, SFX are satisfying and when you know what to do, it's a quick and fun 15min run.

I know it all sounds quite negative so far, but it's not all bad though, far from it. One thing that I must stress though... if you're going to play this, do yourself a favor and use a guide, or else you'll probably want to quit as soon as you go to the Sewers for the 1st time, not knowing where to go because everything looks the same, getting attacked from all directions, with tons of bats swarming you and taking away all of your health as you try to find upgrades and fail because they're all hidden in the most cryptic manner possible... it takes a nosedive in quality here so a guide is a must, at least to me. Anyways, I was going to talk about what I liked... and there was lots of it, there's a reason I tried so hard to keep up when I could've just given up, there are lots of qualities here. Well, the 1st thing you'll notice is how it looks and sounds, not only are all sprites and environments well detailed for GBC standards, we've also got some quality tunes and SFX in the OST... and the best part to me is its atmosphere, it's dark, grim, but not edgy and overdone, it feels appropriate for the story told, which is also a good time really.

We have a password system that works well, as intended, and has an atmospheric and moody password screen too which I love... and while I think they messed up a lot of what they went for with this MetroidVania lite style, mostly in execution, some of it does work, when you know how to get all of the upgrades and power Spider-Man up, also some grinding to fully level him up, you feel the difference from early on, how you take enemies down quicker and with ease, when they used to give you trouble. Overall, it can be fun with a guide, combat is satisfying, at least apart from enemies constantly respawning, some level design is good, and atmosphere is perfect... but it can be a frustrating experience, especially for the reasons mentioned earlier here, still, I don't regret my time with it, and I'm glad I played it.
