iirc the most common complaint was that the game is designed almost entirely around "gotcha" moments coupled with harsh penalties for dying. what's such a shame is that the game could have been pretty good if the designer wasn't such a dick. i spent over an hour on the first wily stage because the checkpoint before this piece of shit comes right before an enormous rush jet segment with only a single, annoying enemy to farm energy from
