I love playing it with pic related. Dosbox lets you map controls by pressing ctrl+F1.

For NES, SNES and Genesis/Saturn I use cheap chinese repro usb controllers, they are surprisingly okay for the 4$ price.

It's not the most durable one so it will probably die fast with rough people. If you're nice with it you'll enjoy the simplicity. D-pad is no good.

Great for the price ( <$20 ), works for pretty much anything you could ever need. I like the d-pad a lot as well.

If not that, I'd use my original sega saturn controller with usb converter.
