>game is becoming a slog, we are repelling massive attacks by the computer left and right while booming like mad but the AI's pulled 10 castles out of its ass and its base is virtually impenetrable
>the AI collects all the relics in a monastery hidden deep within its town surrounded by castles and masses of longbowmen and skirmishers
>friend says we're as good as dead
>with our last gold I muster a mobile force of eagle warriors that just walks its way past the enemy forces and attacks the monastery, managing to bring it down with only 2-3 warriors remaining
>the game deteriorates into a hour-long trash wars where we are defending our town centers all over the map constantly spamming halberdiers and skirmishers from 20-30 barracks and archery ranges, fighting off a constant onslaught of skirmishers, rams, champions and the occasional trebuchet (I have no idea where the AI was getting the gold from at this point)
>Friend: "Maybe if we can collect the relics, we can win..."
>the relics are still at the former monastery site behind 10 castles, we can't muster nearly enough gold to keep a stream of rams and trebuchets enough to power through them
>10 minutes later, I realize that if we can't get the relics, we can build a wonder
>have a PERFECT wonder spot next to one of our town centers in the corner of the map completely surrounded by trees and water, out of trebuchet range, with only a small wallable passage that already has 20 barracks and archery ranges between it and our constantly besieged main town
>the computer could have broken in anyway if it really tried, but it spent the rest of the game besieging our backup town with little more than palisade walls, some farms and a few archery ranges constantly spamming skirmishers to keep the gigantic AI army occupied and distracted from the wonder
>we win
>4,000 units killed from both sides in the end
