Exactly!

If it's been a long time ago, do so, your perspective may be different. I'd suggest to play on Hard mode, to not make it too easy. A certain FPS thread has the links you need to get the music for the game, which is often missing in a lot of the digital rereleases.

I love Quake's color palette, muted and desaturated, but not completely gray and brown. More games could learn from that. The texture work is also divine, as usual with anything Adrian Carmack made.

>The enemies were spongy as fuck
They really aren't, even on Hard Mode you're given plenty of Quad Damage and explosive ammo, and it's pretty easy to get your value's worth out of shells.
You're probably thinking them damage sponges because A; the Shambler takes half damage from explosives (thus you save the nails or thunderbolt for them as much as you can), and B; the base shotgun isn't as powerful as in Doom, when it's not supposed to be the game's shotgun tier weapon, but rather is a pistol tier weapon, and its speed and tight spread actually makes it better than average compared to most game's pistols of that era.

Someone either shoop away the ears on that cat, or put kawaii uguu catears on a Shambler, I need one of these to happen.

It's from a model pack I found. It looks a bit higher definition, but not so advanced and featured that it looks out of place.
He still has the same gait and attack in the same way.

I'd compare it to the Half-Life High Definition Pack, but changing things far less, just adding some more polygons on some of the existing models, and very slightly higher res textures (I think maybe the Shambler's new skin is based partially on the original's gib model, because the classic severed Shambler head has a higher resolution texture than the actual living model itself).

I'll agree on that point, people try a lot of unconventional things with Doom modding. I think the more creative people who wanted make true 3D FPS probably went on to GoldSrc, because just things like skeletal animations alone are far easier to work with and produce superior results to the crude animation Quake utilized.
It let you do a lot of the same things as with Quake, but more flexibly and with far more options.

Those models look fucking disgusting by the way, and not in a good way. If you want to spice up Quake's visuals a bit, it should be something like pic related.
