Bullshit, the MSX of all machines got a great port of R-Type and that couldn't even properly do horizontal scrolling. Current word is that NEC paid Irem to not port it to Famicom / NES to make the PC-Engine port a system-seller.

No it was for the game, by sci-fi artist Naoyuki Katoh. He also did the art for the MSX port of R-Type. He also regularly did covers for MSX Magazine.

I love Shmups, I just was playing some Blazing Star, but they are a difficult genre to discuss because so much about them is based on the nuances of how they play, but that's also their strength as well, it's a very "pure" genre of video games.
