What made you switch over from modern to retro? At what point did you decide that you were more interested in games of old than the current era? For me it was:

-Growing interest in clones and handmade consoles. I used to look at stuff like Ben Heck all the time, then things like SupaBoy began to come out and it was huge for me
-Unboxings on YouTube. People still do them for new games, but there's something special about seeing an old game (especially one for NES or SNES) in its original packaging being unboxed.
-Price. For a while, retro gaming was actually a lot cheaper than modern gaming. I'd say they're now about the same depending on the system/condition
-Too many games. It's a weird problem. You stop playing your old consoles and after a while, you realize you have so many games you haven't played in a while, there's no reason to get new ones.
-Time. I am basically a casual gamer now, and I don't have time for massive-scale console or handheld games from this generation, so older, smaller games are better suited for me.
-Finally, missed opportunities. There were a lot of games and consoles I wanted as a kid, but I never got them because I got other (usually more popular) games instead. There are also a lot of gems I didn't know about back then, and being able to get them and play them as an adult is a real treat.
