The "looks like candy" thing is form of backwards explanation that came later from people who didn't know about the SNK candy series or candy shop cabinets. There's probably a fancy word for it.

BTW you probably read the "they're called candy cabinets because they look like candy" on a forum somewhere instead of coming that conclusion yourself. Now you're reading new information on a different forum. Why can't you integrate new information over the old? Getting stubborn in your old age?
What's that thing about once people read something once they tend to believe it forever even if they are confronted by facts saying the opposite?
