the service manual i found has a full block diagram, electrical schematic and operation diagram for every IC except the CPU which is just a PIC.

what i found is there is a pin labeled "RGB SW" that switches over from the "color decoder" IC which takes composite and spits out RGB, this pin is controlled by the CPU directly so the actual RGB mode is completely software controlled. Now i just need to find where that pin actually exists IRL and that will allow me to inject the signal at the correct point.

in the diagram i'm attached at the R/G/B OUT pins, sending it into the RGB Matrix IC is probably the way to go.
