MiSTer offers a more realistic replacement for real hardware when supply inevitably diminishes. The best way to put it is that It's basically a bunch of everdrive carts wrapped into one as far as consoles go. Personally, the pros and cons come with what you are looking for but there are no absolute reasons why you can't use both. On the actual gaming side, software emulation is convenient to access on multiple devices you should already own. Companies have also re-released their games as part of compilations sometimes with enhancements or just basic modern emulator features to help new players enjoy old games. You don't even have to download shit, you just open a web browser and play the game on archive's web emulators. Where MiSTer wins though is the comparable performance to the actual hardware which provides a closer reference point to how a game should behave when you don't have convenient access to original hardware. What I don't understand is why people get so stuck up about the MiSTer. People are curious about novel ways to enjoy retro games and that alone is a valid reason to pick up a MiSTer FPGA. If you don't end up liking it, just resell it and possibly make a little bit extra back because the demand is insane. These threads are always flooded with people gripping to the illusion that there is only one true solution and the other options are going to give you cancer. What it seems like you think you are doing is saving people money by arguing against FPGA but you're actually stagnating a beneficial relationship where obscure games have a chance to be playable on software emulators thanks to the developments discovered while tracing functions on the physical chips.
