Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced has one of the most clever boss fights against a clone/mirror I've ever played.

Crash 1.

At that time 2D platformers were pretty much perfected thanks to the efforts in the early 90s with the Genesis and SNES, while 3D was a new beast. I'd say this is the 3D platformer that feels closest to 2D, which many hold against it, but it works in its favor for me, as instead of doing a ton of experimentation, mainly in the camera department, and failing, it simply works...

>the sequels polished the core gameplay at the cost of everything else
Indeed, and to be fair I genuinely enjoy the simplicity in the gameplay and level design of the original, it felt like a very pure platformer and the challenge was more interesting.

Well, for me it's thanks to a few reasons, it's the closest to a pure platformer, the one with least gimmicks, Crash's moveset and the level design was more basic and I find that more enjoyable, it had a darker atmosphere, but not too dark, and the way saving worked, alongside having to not lose a single life to get a gem, made 100% more difficult, but also more engaging to me, I have a lot more fun with this one still, though I get why most prefer the sequels over it, and that's fine. I also prefer Crash's model in the original, looks a lot less goofy, while still being charmful, and he looks scared sometimes, which is appropriate...

I know this isn't the most popular opinion, but i'd take the 1st Crash Bandicoot game over all of the others.

When it comes to what the best game in the series is, most people narrow it down to the original trilogy, out of them the original is the one that's usually most disliked, for being the most primitive, having the worst controls, being too hard at times, but personally the reason it's my favorite is all of those things.

The simplicity of it is charming, the lack of a warp room makes it the one with the most adventurous feel, the lack of gimmicks makes it the most platforming focused, and while the difficulty can be tough for some, it's way less annoying than the relics in the 3rd game or the N. Sanity Trilogy, at least to me.

I'm always switching back and forth between the 1st and 2nd games when it comes to what's the best in the series, but usually my favorite really is the original.
